Superheroes on the Job Search or Being Found?

Aktualisiert: 30. Dez. 2021

Before you can start searching or being found, you need to clarify what your next career step will be. Ask yourself the following questions.

  • Which industry or company do you want to work for?

  • Do you want to stay in your current function or search for a new job?

  • Are there any specific values or work culture, which are important to you for your next job?

The search areas are easy to find using a simple evaluation sheet. For the values, most people know, what they don’t want. Value tests can help to narrow them down. Many of them are available for free.

Do you already have your personal career strategy? Now, where do you find your dream job? If you are looking actively for a job, there are several options you can do so.

The first obvious option is online job search platforms like jobsearch.ch. In Switzerland, every Marketing job must be registered on a special job platform first, before being openly posted. Only registered unemployed persons have access to it. But there is an “open version” from the unemployment office called Jobagent collecting jobs from Swiss-based companies on the page. On all platforms, simply enter your search keywords, pick your job and apply. You can also get job alert email notifications.

There are also a couple of new platforms out there, where you can upload your CV and are supposed to be contacted by headhunters. Personally, I have not received any valuable feedback from there, except offers to update my CV for me for a handsome fee. And there are paid job search platform versions promising detailed access to special job offers. Check them carefully, before you pay anything! Most of the time you can simply copy the job title and will find the details in another job search platform or directly on the company’s homepage for free.

Almost every social media platform has nowadays a job fair. Enter your keywords and if wished, activate the email notification. Which platform is the right one for you, Linkedin, Glassdoor, XING, …? That depends on your career strategy.

You already have a pretty good idea of what values the company should live. Or always wanted to work for this one company. Pick your top 5 companies. Unsolicited applications are almost not existent anymore. But, many bigger companies have a talent pool and job alert email notifications.

In the digital age, getting found is also an option. Your social media profile needs to include all relevant keywords to be found for your specific dream job. Make sure you get this right, as headhunters are searching those.

And finally, there is the hidden job market. I personally get information from my network about job openings. For these jobs, I usually also get an interview. 😉 Spread the word! And networking is not just collecting contacts on Social Media. Building up relationships (be that with headhunters or other contacts) takes interest in the other person and time. So start this early in your search process.

Of course, these channels can be mixed. Support your online application with one of your network contacts. Let them recommend you to HR and raise your chances.

The job search is just the first step in your journey and the day has only 24 hours. Here are some figures to think about. There are approximately 300 applications for 1 position. Only 5-7 people are invited to interviews.

What is your search strategy? Over which channel will you most likely find your dream job and get interviews? Spend most of your time and energy there.
